Academics Overview

Studying at the Seshadripuram Law College (SLC) is quite exciting and the experience is unique. It facilitates all round development of the personality of the students. Value based education is given more importance. The teaching methods adopted for the degree program are such as to promote multi-disciplinary inquiry and practical appreciation of problems. The method of teaching involves lectures, discussions, case studies, Moot Courts and project work. Many innovative methods are followed by the SLC to attain the standard.

There is a high degree of interaction between the students and the teachers in the classroom. This is largely facilitated by the fact that at the commencement of the semester, each student is given a set of reading materials containing the course outline, teaching plan, reading lists and a fairly large volume of study materials in respect of each course. They consist of case studies, judicial decisions, articles and excerpts from reports. With this material, the students are expected to come prepared for the classes and actively participate in classroom discussions. Faculty at the SLC is very accessible. With an excellent faculty-student ratio, SLC provides an exciting opportunity for the students to interact with the teachers and their classmates.

Beyond exchanges between students and faculty in the classroom, there are more formal means of communication aimed at improving the class experience and student life. At the end of each course, the students are expected to undergo an evaluation process of the courses undertaken by them in that semester. Students as well as teachers evaluation and assessment helps in more accurately identifying students concerns especially in courses that are taught for the first time.

Calendar of events issued by the Karnataka State Law University, Hubli is adopted meticulously and maximum number of working days are devoted for the course. Students' attendance is marked through IPOMO software. Students have to attend 75% of the classes in each term. Sufficient time is provided for extra-curricular and curricular activities. The courses on Clinical Legal Education are taught by integrating classroom teaching with stimulation exercises. College takes pride in possessing a good, well furnished and well equipped moot court hall which is put to maximum use. Each and every student shall take part in the moot court. Students are continuously trained to become full-fledged advocates at the end of the course for which the help of experts in the field is used. Students are encouraged to research on specific topics and present the same in seminars. Efforts are being made to expose students to the field and court realities. Students are sent to various courts and law offices to observe the proceedings. They also visit prisons, juvenile homes and remand homes to study and to conduct survey and field investigations. These help in improving research skills, analytical abilities as well as the communication skills of the students.

Students are encouraged to go to the field and interact with the common man, through various programmes. SLC and its alumni are sensitive to their social responsibility also. Various programmes are designed to spread legal awareness among the public. Free legal consultation and aid are actively undertaken in cooperation and in coordination with state agencies. This is particularly useful for the multi-disciplinary analysis of socio-legal problems.

The college has a team of able full-time professors, senior members of the bar with vast knowledge, and also guest faculty with vast experience in teaching. Some of the professors are also elevated to high Judicial posts. The College is proud to mention a few of them - Hon'ble Justice V. Jagannathan as Judge, High Court of Karnataka, and Prof. H. B. Prabhakara Sastry as District and Session Judge. They all served in several capacities including as members of our teaching faculty.

The teaching instructions are in accordance with the bar council of India and Karnataka State Law University, Hubli. Medium of Instruction is English. Candidates may at their option, answer in the examination either in English or in Kannada. The College looks forward in true spirit to new horizons sincerely dedicating ourselves in the field of legal studies.
